So many times in the past I have driven from Twizel to Omarama and back, past this beautiful Lake, and promised myself that someday I would stop and paint it. This year that day finally arrived. Although it is spectacular in this painting, in fact as you drive past you only catch fragmentary glimpses. It is also on the main road with no real parking place. Traffic whizzes by and you feel very exposed. We pulled a long way over, well clear of them and scrambled down through the willows. By the lake it was very quiet and peaceful. I have made another promise: I will be back. This will not be the last Ruataniwha painting.
